Description

The Democracy Park and Jungang Park embodies the living spirit and philosophy of patriotic soldiers and democratic spirits. This is where the spirits of the great citizens of Busan who endlessly resisted to protect the country and defend democracy at the heart of confusion rest. Citizen Square and Sculpture Garden were established after Daecheong Park and Daesin Park were consolidated and renamed as Jungang Park. Then, Democracy Park opened on October 16, 1999. It is a space that represents the spirit of democracy exhibited by the people of Busan since the anti-Japanese struggle during the Japanese occupation that led up to the 4.19 Democratic Struggle, the BUMA Democratic Uprising, as well as the 6.10 Democracy Movement, where the Democratic Movement Memorial Center served as the central location. Walk past Citizen Square of Jungang Park and walk around Sculpture Garden to reach 4.19 Square. Here, you will see the Memorial Place and Memorial Tower for 4.19 Movement Sacrifices, who fought against a dictatorship in the name of democracy. Ascend the stairs from the 4.19 Square toward the Democratic Movement Memorial Center to reach the Tribute Yard, which is a space for visitors to pay respect to those who died while fighting to protect democracy. Moreover, pay tribute at the “Name of Democracy” sculpture, and remember the legacy of the fallen. The torch, sticking out of the Pro-democracy Movement Memorial Hall, represents nameless stars who fought for democratization catches one’s attention. Each small bead comes together to shine brightly. Climb up the Snail Trail to reach the second-floor exhibition hall where the Nul-pyulchuboim Hall awaits visitors. The room is designed in a way to help viewers understand the historical flow of the democratization movement at once. As you watch the exhibition, you may whisper the words, “The sovereign power of Korea resides with the people, and all power comes from the people.” The Jabeun-pyulchuboim Hall at the third-floor Planned Exhibition Hall is where the special exhibitions are held on special days of April, May, June, and October. Enjoy scheduled performances at the 400-seat theater and the only black box theater in Busan. Turn your gaze to the opposite side of the Democracy Park to see the national flag flap on top of Chunghontap Tower. This is a sacred memorial that honors the spirits of the patriotic soldiers from Busan who sacrificed their lives for the motherland. The tower is visible from anywhere in the surrounding area. It is a leading landmark in the city with a great view of Busan. Busan is always present in the large movement for the development of democracy in Korea. Commemorate the numerous unknown heroes, and give thanks for the freedom and democracy you enjoy today. ** Democracy Park is celebrated for its stunning double cherry blossoms that reach their peak bloom in late spring. Characterized by their unique two-layered flower formation, these blossoms create a breathtaking display from mid to late April. The vibrant pink flowers spread throughout the park enhance the walking experience, making it both pleasant and delightful for visitors.
Jungang Park
Phone: +82-51-860-7800 Address: 187, Mangyang-ro 193 beon-gil, Seo-gu, Busan
Democracy Park
Phone: +82-51-790-7400 Address: 19, Minjugongwon-gil, Jung-gu, Busan Homepage: http://www.demopark.or.kr/eng/main/sub_demopark.asp
