Description
Saebyeok Bridge Saebyeok Bridge was newly constructed when the Cheonggyecheon Stream was restored in 2005. Near the bridge there are two traditional markets, Gwangjang and Bangsan Market. The merchants of these markets came out early in the morning to prepare to open for service, pitching tents and arranging items. The dawn of the traditional market was very lively due to many crowded people. Therefore, the name of the bridge became ‘Saebyeok’, which means ‘dawn’ in Korean language, containing the vibrant feeling of Gwangjang and Bangsan Market at early dawn. Gwangjang and Bangsan Market In November 1905, merchants of Jongno organized a large marketplace called Gwangjang Market on the Saebyeok Bridge. The market mainly traded agricultural and marine products until 1950, but after the Korean War, it mostly traded relief goods or foreign goods from the US military base located next to the Hullyeonwon Park. From the 1960s, it became famous for its textile and apparel markets, and now it is noted for its food alleys. Bangsan Market that is located at the south side of Saebyeok Bridge initiated from a small market during the Japanese colonial period. It traded all sorts of food items exported from the US Army Base shortly after the National Liberation, and it later developed into a grocery and food additives market during the 1960s. By the end of the 1980s, it became a specialized market for printing and packaging.
