Description
Narae Bridge was newly built in front of the Pyeonghwa Market during the restoration work of the Cheonggyecheon Stream in 2005. Pyeonghwa Market was created by the refugees who formed a shantytown around the Cheonggyecheon Stream during the Korean War. Most of the refugees were from North Korea who left their hometowns, and they named this market ‘Pyeonghwa’, which means 'peace', with the hopes of peaceful reunification. Shantytown and street stalls that were concentrated at the Cheonggyecheon Stream burned down by a massive fire in 1958 and 1960. Pyeonghwa Market was rebuilt at the old location of the shantytown when the Cheonggyecheon Stream was covered. Dongdaemun Market, which includes the Pyeonghwa Market, is the center of clothing commerce. The bridge near the market was designed to embody the flutter of butterfly wings with the meaning of rising clothing business in Dongdaemun.
