Description
A pure Korean word for Cheonggyecheon Stream Malgeunnae Bridge was newly constructed during the restoration work of the Cheonggyecheon Stream in 2005. The bridge was named ‘Malgeunnae’, which is a pure Korean word for ‘Cheonggyecheon’. ‘Gaecheon‘, the name of Cheonggyecheon Stream during the Joseon Dynasty In the Early Joseon Dynasty, Cheonggyecheon Stream was only a small river. Around the stream that flowed throughout Hanyang, shopping streets and private houses entered. When the rain was heavy during summer, water from each tributary flowed into the stream, causing the stream to flood, and this resulted in many deaths and damages in buildings. In 1412, King Taejong mobilized 50,000 soldiers to embark on a construction that expanded the Cheonggyecheon stream. Also, the king placed a stone bridge on the stream and built an embankment on the riverside. Thereafter, flood damage was reduced. During the period of King Taejong, Gaecheon, which was a common noun meaning ‘stream’, was used as a proper name indicating the Cheonggyecheon Stream. 'Gaecheon' was the name for Cheonggyecheon Stream during the Joseon Dynasty. Cheonggyecheon Stream It is unclear when ‘Gaecheon’ became ‘Cheonggyecheon’, but in 1914, the term 'Cheonggyecheon' was featured in newspapers. The Japanese Government General of Korea investigated the current condition of the stream in 1914, and arranged every names of rivers. The origin of the name 'Cheonggyecheon' is unknown. It is said that this term is from the Chinese characters that means 'clear, flowing stream', and it is also said that the name came after ‘Cheongpung Gyecheon’, which is a river located at the upper region of the Cheonggyecheon Stream.
