Description

Muhakgyo Bridge Muhakgyo Bridge was newly built during the restoration work of Cheonggyecheon Stream. On the south side of Muhakgyo Bridge, there is Muhak Street, and there was a wide field at this place during the period of Joseon Dynasty. This place is related to a folk tale about Great Master Muhak and Hanyang, the capital of Joseon. A folk tale about Hanyang, the capital of Joseon King Taejo, who established Joseon in 1392, wanted to move the capital to a new place. Great Master Muhak received the king’s command and he looked up Gyeryongsan Mountain at first, but although it was advantageous to prevent the invasion of enemies due to surrounding mountains, the transportation was poor. Soon, he visited Hanyang and crossed the Hangang River by a boat from Ttukseom Island, and he found a wide field at a glance. He thought that this place was suitable as the capital due to the wide land and river. At that moment, an old man driving a cattle passed beside Muhak, shouting, “Stupid cow! You are as fool as Muhak. Why are you trying to go through the wrong way although there is a right path?” Great Master Muhak was astonished, so he held the old man and asked why. The old man answered, “Muhak is looking for the capital, but he is leaving the good places behind and only searching for the wrong places. How pathetic is that?” After hearing that, Great Master Muhak politely put his hands together and asked, “I am that stupid Muhak. I thought this place was suitable as the capital, how do you think?” "From here, just go in four more kilometers and look around." After saying this, the old man drove his cattle and walked away. When Muhak followed the old man's advice and went in four more kilometers, there was a place that was suitable as a capital. It was the place that later became Hanyang Fortress. Muhak then met with King Taejo and said that Hanyang was appropriate as the new capital city. The spot where Muhak met with the old man was named ‘Wangsimni’. Muhakgyo Bridge was newly built in 2005 when the Cheonggyecheon Stream was restored.
