Description

Taekyun In ‘Daeqwaedo’, a painting that depicts the custom of the Late Joseon Dynasty, two people are practicing Ssireum(Korean wrestling) with each other, and below them there are people measuring their ability of Taekyun against each other. People of all ages have gathered to watch them; there are people selling food next to them and some are drinking alcohol at the bottom. It shows that Taekyun was widespread together with Ssireum, which was a traditional folk game. Taekyun Competition On Dano, the fifth of May, the people from ‘Utdae’, which is the west of Cheonggyecheon’s mainstream and ‘Araedae’, the area around Ogansumun Floodgate gathered near Cheonggyecheon Stream and held a Taekyun Madang, which is a Taekyun competition. Outside Hanyang, the castle town, Taekyun of Wangsimni and Aeogae region were famous. Therefore, when the Taekyun Madang was held with them, the region outside the castle town was called ‘Araedae’, and the inside one was called ‘Utdae’. Taekyun Madang started from ‘Aegipae’, where children competed their skills, and then it went on to ‘Taekyunpae’ where leaders came out and contended for victory. It was a competition of each villages’ honor, but dangerous techniques were forbidden in order to promote harmony and fellowship. Taekyun Battle in Insa-dong The first human cultural asset of Taekyun, Song Deok-gi says that the custom of Taekyun Madang disappeared around 1919 when the Japanese police forbade it. The Japanese government tried to encourage the dissemination of karate and judo, and break the tradition of Taekyun. With congenial people, Song Deok-gi passed on Taekyun at Inwangsan Mountain. Together with Jongno-gu Office, Kyulyun Taekyun Association had set up a sign saying "Joseon’s Last Training Site for Taekyun" on the training site at Gamtu Rock that is located at the end of Inwangsan Mountain’s Jarak-gil Street. Today, there are still people training Taekyun there. Taekyun Madang, which was once forbidden, is being held in the Culture Madang at Insa-dong every Saturday at 4 pm in the name of ‘Taekyun Battle’.
