Description
Suseonjeondo, a map of Hanyang Suseonjeondo is South Korea’s national treasure No. 853, which is a map of Hanyang drawn by Kim Jung-ho, the greatest cartographer of Joseon during the middle of the 18th century. The original copy is preserved in Korea University Museum. ‘Suseon’ means the representative city of a nation, the capital. Thus, ‘Suseonjeondo’ is a map of Hanyang, Joseon’s capital. On this map, the inner part of Hanyang Fortress is painted on a reduced scale, and the outer part is painted simply. This type of tracing method that accurately depicts only the important parts implements the method that was used in 'Dosungso', which was a map drawn during the time of King Yeongjo, the 21st king of Joseon and King Jeongjo, the 22nd king of Joseon. It is regarded as an excellent map that retains the image of Hanyang during the 18th century because the inner part of the city is elaborately depicted. Also, this map is in fine lines, beautifully expressing the terrains of the mountains, and the brush strokes are very delicate. This map that includes alleys, names of mountains and administrative districts based on actual data, can stand the comparison with a modern map. Suseonjeondo is a map that is printed on a woodcut, so there are several copies of this map. In 1892, missionaries from Western countries used transcribed copies of this map. In this map, names of places in Hanyang are written in Korean, so it is a valuable resource that shows changes in the place names of Hanyang in the late 19th century.
