Description
Ogansumun Floodgate Ogansumun is a name of the five semicircular shaped floodgates that were built together with Hanyang’s rampart during the Early Joseon Dynasty. These floodgates’ heights were not so high that a person could pass through, so they were blocked with barbed-wire fences. However, when every gates in the castle town were closed, the rebel forces and thieves went in and out of the capital city through these floodgates. The passage for the rebel forces and thieves In 1506, the rebel forces entered the capital city through Ogansumun Floodgate and dethroned Yeonsangun, enthroning King Jungjong. Therefore, Gwanghaegun, who was concerned about another rebellion, commanded the repair of this gate. However, he was dethroned because he got drunk and ignored the accusation of treason. During the reign of King Myeongjong, a famous thief called Im Kkeok-jeong used this gate to escape out of the castle town. Ogansumun Floodgate was demolished with the rampart during the Japanese Colonization Era, and Ogansugyo Bridge was built at the location of the gate. During the restoration project of Cheonggyecheon Stream, a miniature of the Ogansumun Floodgate was built next to the newly constructed Ogansugyo Bridge.
