Description
Juncheondo Juncheondo is a picture that was painted when King Yeongjo, the 22nd king of Joseon, went to Ogansumun Floodgate to encourage the dredging construction in 1760. It is published in a book called ‘Juncheon Gyecheop’. In the painting, King Yeongjo looks down at the construction in the tent on the rampart of Ogansumun Floodgate, and the courtiers are standing at his side. The spot where King Yeongjo is supposed to be standing is empty because the only painting that could depict the king is the king’s portrait. There are workers dredging the soil or driving the cattle under the rampart. Under the willow trees at the hills of Cheonggyecheon Stream, noblemen wearing Gat(Korean traditional hat made of bamboo or horsehair) are watching the workers. Barbed-wire fences that were built around the Ogansumun Floodgate to prevent random people from entering the castle town is clearly seen in the picture. The painting thoroughly expresses the Ogansumun Floodgate and the dredging construction of that time. King Yeongjo’s desire and Im Jun’s rapid rise King Yeongjo visited the Ogansumun Floodgate several times to watch the progress of the dredging construction, and the day depicted in this painting was rainy and windy. The courtiers advised Yeongjo to return, but he did not listen. He rather promoted one of his courtiers, Im Jun for not dissuading him. In this way, King Yeongjo revealed his wish, the safe completion of the construction. Ascribable to King Yeongjo’s hope, the dredging construction that mobilized over 200,000 people for 57 days was safely completed.
