Description
The resting area of Joseon’s women In the past, the Cheonggyecheon Stream was a place where women of households came out to do the laundries and chat with their neighbours. After the laundry, mothers would hold hands with children who took bathe at the stream, and return home together. This was a relaxing place for busy people in Hanyang. A construction covering the Cheonggyecheon Stream After the Korean War, refugees gathered in Seoul and formed a shantytown around the Cheonggyecheon Stream. They drove posts on the brook and built embankments, placing shacks on top of them. These shacks became two-storied due to refugees who incessantly gathered, thus the houses were often burnt down or swept away. Also, garbages that were carelessly dumped around the stream caused an infectious disease. People who have lost their relaxed lives decided to cover the Cheonggyecheon Stream rather than saving it. 40 years before the restoration In 1958, the Cheonggyecheon Stream was covered with concretes, and roads and buildings were constructed over it. Unsatisfied people built overpasses on regular roads and constantly drove on them. Markets began to enter the buildings, and it became the most bustling place in Seoul where many people visited. Until the restoration project in 2005, the Cheonggyecheon Stream was buried under the ground for about 40 years.
