Description
Jangtonggyo Bridge next to Jangtongbang Jangtonggyo Bridge was named after ‘Jangtongbang’, one of Hanyang’s administrative districts. During the period of Joseon, this bridge was located at a place where Cheonggyecheon Stream met Namsandong-cheon Stream, the stream that came from the Namsan Mountain. This is the spot where a river that is ten meters wide suddenly broadens and becomes 20 meters wide. Jangtonggyo Bridge was built on this place, thus it had to be longer that any other bridges on the upstream. This is why it was also called ‘Janggyo Bridge’, which meant ‘long bridge’. Today’s Jangtonggyo Bridge was newly built during the restoration work of Cheonggyecheon Stream in 2005. Jungchon’s official translators Jungchon is a town that starts from Jangtonggyo and ends at Supyogyo Bridge. Jungin, who were the middle class people of Joseon Dynasty’s caste system, were the main residents of this place. Jungin usually worked as official translators or doctors. Official translators of Joseon often visited China and Japan with ambassadors. Their job was to translate, collect information, and handle foreign affairs. However, their wages were absurdly low, so the country provided them the right to trade. Thus, they accumulated wealth through trading ginseng or silk. In fact, so many translators were affluent during the time that there even was a famous quote saying “A nation’s property equals with those of ten translators' families.” Jungchon’s doctors Many doctors also lived in Jungchon, next to Jangtonggyo Bridge. They were doctors who earned lots of money through medical practices. During the latter period of Joseon Dynasty, many common people were affluent due to commercial development. Those people were highly attentive about health, so numerous pharmaceutic stores and clinics were created. Doctors undertook checkups and wrote prescriptions that were called ‘Hwajae’, and pharmacies prepared medicine for patients. Also, there were specialized clinics in fields such as pediatrics, gynecology, and surgery.
