Description
Samilgyo Bridge Samilgyo is a bridge that was built during the restoration work of Cheonggyecheon Stream in 2005; it is called ‘Samilgyo’ due to its northwards connection with Samillo Street. Samillo Street Joseon became a colony in 1910 due to Japan’s annexation of Korea. On March 1st, 1919, people of Korea held a major demonstration to show the world that Koreans are resisting against Japan and are demanding independence. People gathered at the Tapgol Park at the north of Samilgyo Bridge and began to read the Declaration of Independence as they marched on the road in front of the park. In 1966, this road was named ‘Samillo Street’ to commemorate the March 1st Independence Movement. Samil Building and Kim Joong-up In front of Samilgyo Bridge where the Samillo Street begins, there is a black rectangular building, the Samil Building. This building with 31 floors was completed in 1971 to commemorate the March 1st Independence Movement. It was the tallest building and the most famous tourist attraction in Seoul, Korea until 1985, when the 63 Building was built. Along with the Cheonggye Expressway, Samil Building was a symbol of economic growth in the 1970s. It was designed by Kim Joong-up, a noted first-generation architect of Korea. However, Kim Joong-up was deported to France in 1971, without getting paid for designing the Samil Building. This is because when the Wow Apartment collapsed four months after its completion, resulting in 33 casualties, he criticized Park Chung-hee’s regime and Kim Hyun-ok, the Mayor of Seoul, for their development policies. Kim Joong-up was able to return home when the Park regime ended in 1979.
