Ulsan Onggi Festival (울산옹기축제)

Ulsan Onggi Festival is held annually in early May in Oegosan Onggi Village in Ulju-gun, renowned for its traditional onggi (earthenware)-making techniques. The festival promotes the regional specialty, onggi, contributing to the spread of everyday onggi and the development of traditional industries. The main event, “Touch of the Onggi Master,” features demonstrations by master onggi artisans from Oegosan. There are various hands-on activities for children, including stepping on clay, playing with clay, and making and firing onggi. Visitors can also learn about the uses of onggi in food storage and fermentation, and view onggi from around the world. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste local specialties and foods from Ulju.◎ OnggiOnggi is a type of bowl crafted from soil, using water, fire, and wind. This traditional pottery has been produced since the Three Kingdoms period and is well-suited for long-term food storage due to its excellent ventilation and preservative capabilities.

World Pansori Festival (월드판소리페스티벌)

World Pansori Festival is an international music festival that aims to promote pansori , the traditional Korean epic chant, and its values. The festival consists of a variety of performances and concert programs based on its yearly theme. In addition, the festival also has interactive activities for the attendees, such as a free pansori lesson and arts-and-crafts, to make pansori and traditional Korean music more accessible to the public.

WSL Siheung Korea Open Qualifying Series (WSL 시흥 코리아 오픈 국제 서핑대회)

The WSL Siheung Korea Open is held at Wave Park in Siheung, Asia’s largest artificial surfing facility, over three days. As Korea’s first official World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series event, and the first to take place in an artificial wave pool, it has drawn global attention from the surfing community. The venue features a 2,240-meter-long cove and can accommodate up to 160 athletes and 20,000 spectators. The competition features top surfers from multiple countries across men’s and women’s shortboard and longboard divisions. Recognized as a key international event, it is broadcast in several countries and serves as an important stage for competitive surfing in the region. The event is hosted by the Siheung and organized in collaboration with local sports and media partners, with support from national and regional institutions.

Yangpyeong Sansuyu Hanu Festival (양평산수유한우축제)

The festival features a Naru Madang that recreates the market street ambiance around the old traditional quay, an Ogok (five-grain) Madang with various agricultural and specialty products on sale, and traditional activity programs. There is also a food market and a craft market for a festival area.

Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival (연천 구석기축제)

A prehistoric cultural festival is held at the Archaeological Site in Jeongok-ri, where the first humans inhabited the Korean Peninsula. In 1978, the discovery of an Acheulean hand axe in Jeongok-ri, Yeoncheon, garnered global attention, challenging Movius’s theory that divided Paleolithic cultures into Eastern and Western categories. Being recognized for its significance in world prehistoric culture, the festival began as a small event in 1993 to promote and preserve the important Jeongok-ri archaeological site. Now, it has grown into a large-scale festival, attracting over 100,000 visitors each year. Every May, Yeoncheon becomes a hub for experiencing prehistoric cultures from around the world. This special experiential festival offers a unique opportunity to explore the wisdom of early humans who lived in harmony with nature, providing unforgettable inspiration and enjoyment.◎ Acheulean Hand AxeThe Acheulean hand axe is a stone tool from the Paleolithic period discovered at the archaeological site in Jeongok-ri.
